Unit 9
I just used Google for my search engine with "internet benefit society" as my search.
.gov - I was not able to find a site that related to my topic on the .gov top-level domain. I kept getting topics about social security benefits.
.edu - The Internet: Boon or Detriment to Society? by Rob Purdy.
I felt this was credible because the author showed a clear purpose. Also, he showed evenness and coverage because he went over not only the benefits but the negative effects, and also went over very specific areas of who can benefit and who can get negative effects.
.com - 10 Life-changing Benefits of the Internet Age. By Bob Bessette.
I felt this was credible because it gave a clear purpose as well as coverage. It basically covered the most popular aspects of the internet, how they're used, what they're used for, and how it helps people.
.org - No title. By Bruce Hahn.
This article felt credible because it had authority and sources. It was created by an organization that has a reputation to uphold. It was more narrow and focused on how the internet helps students and how the internet's expansion is changing things.
I felt this activity was interesting. Reading about the difference between the top-level domains helps you understand, but actually going out and researching a topic using them really shows you the difference. The best TLD for my particular topic I think would be .edu, it gave the most choices as wel as the most relevant articles.

Ken,
ReplyDeleteYou found some good information with your domain searching but remember-- "can't find anything" means you haven't tried everything. I wonder what would have happened if you had used -social security?
Also, the assignment asked for "citations" and you did not give the full citation with the URL. This is super important if you use a website for any assignment.
Be sure to read the fine print and follow all the directions!
